Spice Facts

Did you know?...

  • Touch was the original name of the group.

  • The original line-up was Victoria Adams, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell and Michelle Stephenson.

  • Michelle Stephenson left the group because of her sick mom and was replaced by Emma Bunton.

  • Geri came up with the name Spice during an aerobics class. It seems to fit because "Because we're all really different," says Emma. And they've already recorded a song called Sugar and Spice.

  • Their fist Handler was Chris Herbert and not Simon Fuller, the man behind their success.

  • It was because of Chris' idea to dress the girls all the same and sing cover versions that they've all decided to take control of the band and leave him.

  • Together they traveled around in Geri's car with a Filofax and a phone, they went to meetings around the country and after a couple of months of not getting anywhere they met Simon Fuller of 19 Management.

  • Their first publicity was when they were the guests of honor at a race meeting at Kempton Park in Surrey. While posing for a photo call with a statue of Desert Orchid, the girls took control and began to climb on the statue. Race goers looked on in disgust and it caused uproar which gave them tabloid and television coverage.
